Does a Trade-In Reduce Sales Tax in Michigan?
A qualifying Michigan dealer trade-in can reduce taxable price, but the 2026 deduction is capped at $12,000. Learn how payoff, equity, and private sales differ.
Published and verified October 2026
A qualifying dealer trade-in can reduce the taxable amount on a Michigan vehicle purchase, but the 2026 deduction is capped at $12,000. If the accepted trade allowance is higher, the amount above $12,000 does not create more tax deduction. Trade allowance, loan payoff, and equity are separate figures.
How the Michigan dealer trade-in deduction works
The allowance must be accepted by the dealer as a qualifying vehicle trade and separately stated in the transaction. The Michigan Treasury's 2022 Revenue Administrative Bulletin explains the deduction and the phased cap; for calendar 2026, the project applies the $12,000 maximum. Apply the 6% tax rate after calculating the eligible deduction from the taxable dealer amount.
| Accepted allowance | Deduction used (subject to taxable base) | Allowance above cap |
|---|---|---|
| $8,000.00 | $8,000.00 | $0.00 |
| $12,000.00 | $12,000.00 | $0.00 |
| $16,000.00 | $12,000.00 | $4,000.00 |
Trade value, payoff, and equity are three different amounts
Trade allowance is what the dealer agrees to credit for the old vehicle. Payoff is what is needed to satisfy the existing loan. Trade equity is allowance minus payoff. A payoff higher than allowance creates negative equity, but it does not enlarge the tax deduction. A positive-equity trade also does not change the deduction beyond the allowance amount.
Worked examples from the Michigan sales-tax engine
Private-party exchanges do not use the ordinary dealer trade credit
This calculator models ordinary private-party purchases separately: the tax base is the greater of purchase price or supported fair-market value, and no dealer trade deduction is applied. A private exchange or multi-vehicle arrangement can raise fact-specific questions; do not assume dealer trade-in treatment applies without Treasury/SOS confirmation.

Michigan trade-in tax questions
Does a trade-in reduce sales tax in Michigan?
It can when a dealer accepts a qualifying vehicle trade and separately states the allowance. The 2026 deduction cannot exceed $12,000 or the available taxable base.
What if my trade is worth more than $12,000?
The supported 2026 deduction remains capped at $12,000; any extra allowance may affect deal economics but is not an additional tax deduction under this rule.
Does the loan payoff reduce the deduction?
No. The accepted trade allowance is the tax figure; payoff changes net equity.
Can negative equity be deducted?
Negative equity does not increase the qualifying trade deduction. Review how the contract handles the payoff and amount financed separately.
Does the trade-in tax credit apply to used-car purchases?
The qualifying dealer trade-in deduction can apply to supported new or used dealer purchases. It does not apply to the ordinary private-party path modeled here.
Is trade equity the same as the tax deduction?
No. Equity is allowance minus payoff; the tax deduction is the eligible separately stated allowance, subject to the cap and taxable-base limit.
