What This California Car Sales Tax Calculator Includes
The calculator estimates California sales or use tax for an ordinary vehicle purchase using the official location rate selected from the October 1, 2026 CDTFA table.
- Vehicle selling price
- A genuine, separately supported seller discount
- Dealer or additional charges you identify as taxable
- The 7.25% statewide base rate
- Applicable district taxes for the selected registration location
Trade-in value remains visible for context but does not reduce the taxable selling price. Title, registration, CHP, VLF, TIF, dealer-controlled fees, financing, and optional products are outside this calculator.
Calculation method
How California Vehicle Sales Tax Is Calculated
Begin with the agreed vehicle selling price. Subtract only a qualifying seller discount, then add charges that are part of the taxable sale.
Vehicle price − qualifying seller discount + taxable additions = taxable amount
The engine applies the total CDTFA rate for the selected registration location. It displays the statewide portion and district-tax portion separately so you can see why the total rate may be higher than 7.25%.
Taxable amount × total registration-location rate = estimated vehicle tax
State and district tax
California’s 7.25% Base Rate and District Taxes
California's statewide sales and use tax base is 7.25%. Many cities and county areas impose additional district taxes, so buyers do not all pay the same total percentage.
The applicable vehicle use-tax rate is generally based on the address where the vehicle will be registered. Select the county first, then choose the incorporated city or applicable county or unincorporated-area entry. The calculator does not guess from a ZIP code.
CDTFA's October 1, 2026 table contains rates for incorporated cities as well as county or unincorporated locations. Selecting the actual registration location matters even when the dealership is somewhere else.
Important California rule
A Trade-In Generally Does Not Reduce California Car Sales Tax
California generally does not provide the sales-tax trade-in credit available in some other states. If a dealer sells a vehicle for $30,000 and allows $10,000 for a trade, the taxable selling price generally remains $30,000 before any separate qualifying adjustment.
The trade allowance should not be entered as a seller discount. CDTFA directs dealers to report the total selling price and not deduct the trade-in allowance. This engine deliberately keeps trade-in value out of the tax formula to prevent Texas or Florida trade-in logic from carrying into California.
Price adjustments
Seller Discounts and Taxable Additional Charges
A genuine seller discount can reduce the taxable selling price when the transaction records clearly identify the discount. A trade-in over-allowance is not automatically a discount and should not be entered in that field.
Some dealer-installed accessories, preparation work, or other charges may form part of the taxable selling price. Enter an addition only when you have verified that California treats that specific charge as taxable. This tool does not classify an entire dealer quote for you.

California tax questions
Frequently asked questions
What is the California car sales tax rate?
The statewide base rate is 7.25%. Applicable district taxes can increase the total rate for the city or county area where the vehicle is registered.
Which location determines California vehicle sales tax?
CDTFA says vehicle use tax is based on the address where you register the vehicle. Use the applicable incorporated city or county or unincorporated-area rate rather than the dealership's location.
Does a trade-in reduce California car sales tax?
Generally, no. California requires the total vehicle selling price to be reported without deducting the trade-in allowance.
Can a dealer discount reduce the taxable price?
A genuine seller discount can reduce the taxable selling price when it is clearly documented. Do not treat a trade-in allowance or over-allowance as a seller discount.
Is California used car sales tax different from new-car tax?
Both new and used vehicle purchases can be subject to California sales or use tax. The applicable facts, taxable purchase price, exemptions, and collection method may differ, but the registration-location rate remains important.
Does this calculator include registration and dealer fees?
No. It estimates vehicle sales or use tax only. Use the California TTL calculator for supported government registration costs, and review dealer-controlled charges separately.
