California's Transportation Improvement Fee is based on vehicle value and ranges from $33 to $231. See the current TIF brackets and a registration example.
Published and verified October 3, 2026
The California Transportation Improvement Fee is a vehicle-value-based registration charge. The current verified brackets range from $33 for a vehicle valued below $5,000 to $231 for a vehicle valued at $60,000 or more.
What is the California Transportation Improvement Fee?
DMV describes TIF as a fee used for roads, bridges, and road maintenance. It can affect original vehicle registration, transfers, and renewals.
TIF is one part of the registration bill. It is separate from the basic registration component, CHP fee, VLF, county or district charges, and any conditional transaction fees.
Current California TIF brackets
The calculator assigns one fixed TIF amount based on the vehicle value entered. It uses the exact bracket boundaries in the current DMV table:
| Vehicle value | TIF |
|---|---|
| $0–$4,999 | $33.00 |
| $5,000–$24,999 | $66.00 |
| $25,000–$34,999 | $132.00 |
| $35,000–$59,999 | $198.00 |
| $60,000 and higher | $231.00 |
The fee does not increase gradually within a bracket. A vehicle valued at $34,999 has a $132 TIF, while a value of $35,000 enters the next bracket and produces a $198 TIF.
How vehicle value determines the TIF
Use the purchase price or vehicle value applicable to the registration transaction. The calculator compares that value with the bracket ceilings and returns the first matching fee.
Because TIF changes at fixed boundaries, entering an approximate rounded value can put the vehicle into the wrong bracket. Use the best transaction value available and confirm the final determination with DMV.
TIF and VLF are separate charges
Both charges relate to vehicle value, but they use different methods. VLF is estimated as a percentage of value, while TIF uses a fixed bracket.
| Charge | Supported calculation |
|---|---|
| Vehicle License Fee | Estimated at 0.65% of vehicle value |
| Transportation Improvement Fee | Fixed amount from the applicable vehicle-value bracket |
The California VLF guide explains why an actual DMV VLF can differ from the planning estimate.
California TIF worked example
The $198 TIF is only one line in the $535.50 supported estimate. County and district DMV fees and conditional charges remain excluded.
Estimate TIF with the other supported registration fees
The California vehicle registration fee calculator combines the TIF bracket with the $76 registration component, $34 CHP fee, and estimated VLF for an ordinary private passenger automobile.
It does not claim to reproduce an exact DMV invoice. Vehicle class, transaction type, county or district charges, special plates, penalties, and conditional fees can change the final amount.
