New York MCTD Fees Explained

The New York MCTD fee can refer to two different charges: a 0.375% sales-tax component and a fixed registration supplement. Learn how each works.

A New York MCTD fee can mean two separate concepts: a 0.375% sales-tax component calculated from the taxable vehicle amount and a fixed registration supplement of $25 per year, or $50 for the calculator's two-year registration term.

The two MCTD vehicle charges are not the same

MCTD sales tax compared with the registration supplement
ChargeHow it works
MCTD sales-tax component0.375% of the supported taxable amount; part of the jurisdiction's combined sales-tax rate
MCTD registration supplementFixed $25 per year or $50 for two years; part of registration costs

Both can appear in a vehicle purchase estimate, but they use different calculations and must remain separate.

MCTD sales-tax component

Within the district, New York imposes an additional 0.375% sales-tax component. Publication 718's combined jurisdiction rate already includes it, so the calculator separates that portion from the 4% state amount and local tax without adding it twice.

The dollar amount changes with the taxable vehicle receipt. Qualifying additions, seller discounts, and trade-in treatment can therefore affect the MCTD sales-tax amount.

MCTD registration supplement

The registration supplement is a fixed $25 annual charge. The calculator uses the two-year MV-202 passenger registration schedule, so it adds $50 when the owner resides in an MCTD county.

Vehicle price does not change this supplement. County vehicle use tax and the base weight-based registration fee are separate registration charges.

Which New York counties are in the MCTD?

The verified mapping contains 12 county names: Bronx, Dutchess, Kings, Nassau, New York, Orange, Putnam, Queens, Richmond, Rockland, Suffolk, Westchester.

The five New York City boroughs appear under their county names—Bronx, Kings, New York, Queens, and Richmond—along with Dutchess, Nassau, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Suffolk, and Westchester.

Example: MCTD affects tax and registration separately

The engine calculates $112.50 from the taxable amount and adds the fixed $50.00 registration supplement separately. The TTL total also includes the supported base registration, county vehicle use tax, $50 title fee, and new plates.

Keep MCTD charges separate when comparing estimates

A quote or estimate should not collapse the two MCTD amounts into one unexplained line. Use the New York sales-tax calculator for the tax components or the TTL calculator for supported tax and registration costs together.
