Complete purchase total
What Out-the-Door Price Means in New York
Out-the-door price is the supported total required to complete the purchase before applying a trade-in's equity, cash down, or financing. It begins with the negotiated vehicle price and adds entered seller charges, sales tax, title, registration, county charges, and the selected plate cost.
OTD price = vehicle price after seller discount + entered seller charges and products + sales tax + supported government fees
That total is different from the calculator's estimated amount remaining. The remaining amount is shown only after subtracting net trade equity and cash down. It is not called a financed balance because a lender can add or exclude other amounts.
Included costs
What the New York OTD Calculator Includes
- Vehicle selling price after a qualifying seller discount
- Verified taxable additions and separately entered dealer charges
- Optional products entered by the buyer
- New York State, local, and applicable MCTD sales tax
- Two-year passenger registration and county vehicle use tax
- The MCTD registration supplement where applicable
- The $50 title fee and either new or transferred standard plates
Use the New York dealer fee checker to classify quote lines before entering them. The OTD calculator does not infer that every dealer charge or optional product is taxable.
Residence-based tax
New York State, Local, and MCTD Sales Tax
New York's statewide sales-tax portion is 4%. The local portion follows the purchaser's residence taxing jurisdiction, not simply the dealer address or mailing ZIP code. Applicable jurisdictions inside the Metropolitan Commuter Transportation District also include the separate 0.375% MCTD sales-tax component.
The combined rate is applied to the verified taxable receipt after qualifying seller discounts and trade-in treatment. The New York car sales tax calculator provides the same state, local, and MCTD breakdown without the other purchase costs.
Trade-in tax treatment
Qualifying Trade-In Value Can Reduce New York Sales Tax
When the seller accepts the vehicle as part payment, applies the allowance directly to the purchase, and intends to resell it, the full qualifying trade-in value can reduce the taxable receipt. A private barter or a vehicle sold somewhere else does not automatically receive that treatment.
A loan payoff does not reduce the tax credit. If the dealer allows $10,000 and the loan payoff is $7,000, the tax engine uses the $10,000 qualifying allowance while the buyer has $3,000 of net trade equity.
Buyer equity
Trade Value, Positive Equity, and Negative Equity
Trade value is the amount the seller allows for the vehicle. Trade equity is the value after subtracting the outstanding payoff.
Net trade equity = trade-in value − loan payoff
Positive trade equity
When value exceeds payoff, the positive equity reduces the estimated amount remaining after OTD has been calculated.
Negative trade equity
When payoff exceeds value, net equity is negative. Subtracting negative equity increases the amount remaining, but it does not increase the OTD price itself.
Payment separation
Cash Down Does Not Change the OTD Price
Cash down is a payment toward the transaction, not a reduction in the vehicle's out-the-door price. The calculator first produces OTD and then uses this separate formula:
Estimated amount remaining = OTD price − net trade equity − cash down
The result is a planning amount only. Financing can differ because of lender-approved terms, negative-equity handling, credit products, and amounts outside this calculator.
DMV-related costs
Registration, Title, County, MCTD, and Plate Charges
The registration portion uses the vehicle's unladen weight and the DMV's two-year passenger schedule. It can include county vehicle use tax and the $50 two-year MCTD registration supplement based on the purchaser's county.
The government-fee section also includes the $50 certificate-of-title fee plus either $25 for new standard plates or $10 for an eligible New York plate transfer. If the plate choice is unknown, the calculator keeps OTD partial instead of selecting a fee.

New York OTD questions
Frequently asked questions
What does a New York out-the-door price include?
For the supported path, it includes the adjusted vehicle price, entered seller charges and products, residence-based sales tax, two-year passenger registration, county and MCTD charges where applicable, title, and the selected plate fee.
Does a trade-in reduce New York vehicle sales tax?
A qualifying seller-accepted trade-in can reduce the taxable receipt by its allowed value when it is applied directly to the purchase and intended for resale. The loan payoff does not change that tax deduction.
Is trade equity subtracted from the OTD price?
No. OTD is calculated first. Net trade equity is applied afterward only to the separately labeled estimated amount remaining.
Does cash down lower the out-the-door price?
No. Cash down is a payment toward OTD. It lowers the estimated amount remaining, not the transaction's OTD price.
Is the estimated amount remaining a financing quote?
No. It is OTD minus net trade equity and cash down. It is not a guaranteed financed balance, loan approval, interest calculation, or lender quote.
Does the calculator automatically add a $175 dealer fee?
No. The optional dealer registration/title application processing charge is entered only when it appears on the quote. It is separate from actual DMV fees.
