What this Texas TTL calculator includes
Texas tax, title and license is not one flat fee. This calculator estimates each supported government charge separately so you can see what drives the total.
- 6.25% Texas motor vehicle tax using the dealer or private-party rule
- $28 or $33 title application fee based on the purchaser's county of residence
- Base registration, $1 TexasSure and $4.75 processing and handling
- $7.50 annual or $16.75 qualifying initial two-year inspection replacement fee
- Applicable $200 EV fee, $2.75 state emissions portion and a known local fee
Dealer documentation charges, optional products, insurance and financing costs are not Texas TTL government fees.
Calculation method
How Texas tax, title and license is calculated
1. Calculate motor vehicle tax
Dealer purchases generally use the price after an eligible same-transaction trade-in and dealer discount. Many private-party used-vehicle purchases use the higher of the purchase price or 80% of SPV. The applicable taxable amount is multiplied by 6.25%.
2. Add the county-based title fee
The title application fee is $33 in counties on the official TxDMV list and $28 in all other Texas counties. The purchaser or owner's residence county controls the amount.
3. Add known registration charges
The calculator adds the applicable base registration, TexasSure and processing fees, followed by the correct inspection replacement amount and any qualifying EV, emissions or entered local fee.
Rules that change the result
Important Texas TTL rules
- A trade-in changes the tax component only. It does not reduce the title application fee or base registration fee.
- Residence county controls the title fee. Do not use the dealer location or the county that processes the paperwork.
- Registration is vehicle-specific. Weight, category, commercial status, term and EV status can change the total.
- Local registration fees are variable. If you do not enter a verified amount, the calculator leaves it out and labels it clearly.
- Emissions charges are conditional. The $2.75 state portion requires an eligible non-electric vehicle, an active county and the correct effective date.
- TTL is not the full out-the-door price. Dealer fees and optional add-ons belong in a complete purchase-price comparison.

Texas buyer questions
Frequently asked questions
What does TTL mean when buying a car in Texas?
TTL means tax, title and license. It usually combines motor vehicle tax, the title application fee and registration-related government charges.
Is Texas TTL one fixed percentage?
No. Motor vehicle tax is generally 6.25% of the applicable taxable amount, while title and registration use separate fixed or vehicle-specific fees.
Is the Texas title fee $28 or $33?
It depends on the purchaser or owner's county of residence. Counties on the official TxDMV list use $33; every other Texas county uses $28.
Does my trade-in reduce all Texas TTL charges?
No. An eligible same-transaction trade-in can reduce the dealer-purchase tax base, but it does not reduce title or registration fees.
Are dealer document fees part of Texas TTL?
No. A dealer documentation charge is a dealer fee, not a Texas tax, title or registration charge. Review it separately when comparing the out-the-door price.
Why might my final county tax office amount differ?
Your county may add a local registration fee, and specialty plates, late penalties, inspection-station charges or transaction-specific items may apply. This tool shows known inputs and leaves unknown variable charges out.
