What the Illinois Title Transfer Fee Calculator Covers
The Illinois title transfer fee calculator uses a $165 original title fee for a supported ordinary passenger-vehicle purchase. It then adds the applicable dealer ST-556 tax or private-party RUT-50 tax and, when selected, one supported registration path.
There is no separate ownership-transfer fee in this estimate. Title, vehicle tax, registration, and an eligible plate transfer remain distinct line items.
Vehicle tax
Dealer Purchases and Private-Party Purchases Use Different Rules
A supported dealer purchase uses the registered dealer's vehicle-specific Auto Rate and ST-556 selling-price rules. A qualifying dealer trade can reduce the taxable amount, while the trade payoff changes equity rather than the tax credit.
An ordinary private-party purchase uses the 2026 RUT-50 age or value table instead of the dealer percentage system. It receives no dealer trade-in deduction. See the Illinois private-party car tax guide for a fuller explanation.
Local private-party tax
Chicago and Cook County RUT-6 Charges
RUT-6 provides additional private-party vehicle use tax amounts for applicable title or registration addresses. A Chicago address can receive the Chicago amount, and a Cook County address can receive the Cook County amount.
When the address is inside Chicago and Cook County, both verified age-based additions can apply. The live calculator asks for the county and whether the address is inside Chicago rather than assuming from a ZIP code.
Title and registration
$165 Title, $151 Registration, or $25 Plate Transfer
The supported original Illinois title fee is $165. When a new ordinary passenger registration is needed, the calculator adds $151 and treats the standard first plate as included.
An eligible Illinois plate transfer uses the $25 transfer path instead of the $151 new-registration path. The engine does not charge both simultaneously. It also does not invent another ownership-transfer fee.
Electric vehicles
The $100 BEV Registration Addition
A battery-electric vehicle adds $100 when the supported transaction uses a new passenger registration, producing a $251 registration total. The existing engine does not add that new-registration charge when the eligible plate-transfer path is selected.

Illinois title questions
Frequently asked questions
How much is an Illinois vehicle title?
The verified ordinary original-title fee used by this calculator is $165.
Is there a separate Illinois ownership-transfer fee?
No separate ownership-transfer charge is invented. The estimate itemizes the $165 title, applicable tax, and any selected registration or plate-transfer cost.
How is a private-party title transfer taxed?
An ordinary private sale uses the 2026 RUT-50 age or value table, plus applicable Chicago and Cook County RUT-6 amounts. It receives no dealer trade-in deduction.
Can Illinois registration and plate-transfer fees both be charged here?
No. The supported new-registration and eligible plate-transfer paths are alternatives, so the calculator uses either $151 registration or the $25 transfer.
Does a battery-electric vehicle add $100?
Yes, when a supported battery-electric transaction uses new passenger registration. The eligible plate-transfer path does not also add full registration.
Does this calculator support gifts or out-of-state transfers?
No. Gifts, family exemptions, salvage, out-of-state transfers, unusual corrections, penalties, specialty plates, and commercial vehicles remain outside the supported scope.
