Ohio OTD planning

What an Ohio out-the-door price means

An Ohio out-the-door (OTD) price is the purchase total before subtracting your cash down or trade equity. This calculator adds the vehicle price after seller discount, entered documentary charge, optional products and dealer registration/titling service, estimated Ohio sales tax, title charge, registration, and selected plate path.

Ohio's tax amount depends on the purchaser's taxing district and new/used/private-party selection. On a qualifying new-car dealer purchase, the trade allowance reduces the tax base; loan payoff does not reduce that tax deduction. But payoff still changes trade equity: allowance minus payoff is positive or negative equity.

OTD price is not the same as Estimated Amount Remaining. The calculator reports the OTD total first, then subtracts net trade equity and cash down to show an amount remaining for planning. If equity is negative, that negative amount increases what remains. The tool does not calculate lender interest, loan approval, or a financed balance.

Government charges include estimated tax, title, and registration. A qualifying Ohio documentary service charge is dealer-controlled and non-taxable for sales-tax purposes; optional products and the separate registration/titling convenience service are also not government fees. Compare each line against the written buyer's order and advertised price.

Complete engine example: price, taxes, trade and cash

Assumptions: $25,000 new car, $1,000 discount, $5,000 trade allowance, $7,000 payoff paid to a third party after vehicle-price computation, Franklin 8.00% district, $398 qualifying documentary charge, two-year PHEV registration with $10 annual permissive tax, Franklin title office, $700 optional product, $50 registration service, and $3,000 cash down.

Seller subtotal (price − discount + documentary charge)
$24,398.00
Ohio sales tax
$1,520.00
Title + registration
$427.00
Optional product + registration service
$750.00
Out-the-Door Price
$27,095.00
Out-the-Door Price
$27,095.00
Negative $2,000 trade equity
-$2,000.00
Cash down
$3,000.00
Estimated Amount Remaining
$26,095.00

Both totals are direct engine outputs. The amount remaining is not called a financed balance and adds no interest or lender fees.

Ohio OTD questions

Frequently asked questions

What fees are included in an Ohio out-the-door price?

This estimate includes the entered vehicle adjustments, qualifying documentary charge, optional products and convenience service, sales tax, title, registration, and selected plate path.

Is cash down part of OTD?

No. Cash down is subtracted only after the calculator displays OTD, in the separate Estimated Amount Remaining figure.

How does an Ohio trade-in affect OTD?

A qualifying new-car trade can lower sales tax through its allowance. Trade equity is separately calculated from allowance minus payoff and affects amount remaining, not the OTD label.

Does negative equity increase the Ohio taxable price?

It depends on how the contract presents it. The calculator lets you identify whether it is included in vehicle price or paid to a third party after that calculation.

Is the documentary service charge a government fee?

No. It is dealer-controlled. A qualifying charge is excluded from the Ohio sales-tax base and subject to the statutory documentary limits.

Is Estimated Amount Remaining my financed balance?

No. It only subtracts net trade equity and cash down from OTD. It omits interest, lender charges, and financing terms.
