What Ohio vehicle registration costs include

For an ordinary passenger vehicle, Ohio's annual registration fee is $36. The total also includes a Deputy Registrar service fee based on the selected one-to-five-year term, the owner's annual permissive tax when applicable, and any annual hybrid or electric-vehicle fee. Annual items multiply by the registration term; the Deputy Registrar fee follows its own term schedule.

The $36 already includes the $20 passenger license tax and the $16 additional annual fee effective January 1, 2026. Do not add another $5 increase to it. Full-year estimates exclude partial-year proration, mailing, and transaction-specific issuance charges.

Permissive tax is set by the owner's municipality or township in $5 increments up to $30 per year. It is separate from sales tax and does not follow the dealership address. The calculator asks for it explicitly because the correct BMV taxing district depends on the owner's local jurisdiction.

The engine applies $100 per year for a conventional hybrid, $150 for a plug-in hybrid, and $200 for a battery-electric vehicle. These additions are in addition to the $36 passenger registration charge. Specialty plates, commercial registrations, and other special plate classes are outside this ordinary-passenger estimate.

Engine examples: one-year gasoline and two-year EV registration

For a one-year gasoline passenger vehicle with no permissive tax and ordinary first standard plates:

Annual passenger registration
$36.00
Deputy Registrar service fee
$8.00
Plate-number retention fee (not selected)
$0.00
Estimated one-year registration
$44.00

For a two-year BEV renewal with $20 annual permissive tax and existing plates:

$36 annual passenger fee × 2 years
$72.00
$20 annual permissive tax × 2 years
$40.00
$200 annual BEV fee × 2 years
$400.00
Two-year Deputy Registrar fee
$12.00
Estimated two-year registration
$524.00

Transferring a current same-class registration is a separate $9.00 transaction including its deputy fee, assuming no tax or fuel-fee difference. It does not buy a new annual term. Renewal, expired registration, powertrain changes, or unused-registration credits need a BMV quote.

When the $10 plate-number retention fee applies

The $10 charge is tied to keeping the same distinctive plate number/letter combination when replacement plates are issued. It does not apply to an ordinary first standard plate. The supported path is limited by Ohio's plate rules, including same-class conditions; a single duplicate-plate replacement is treated differently. Choose the retention option only when it matches the BMV transaction.

For a qualifying one-standard-plate exchange on a current registration, the calculator combines the $15.00 replacement charge, which already includes the deputy fee, with $10.00 number retention: $25.00 before mailing. That path does not renew the registration or charge the annual fuel fee again.

Ohio registration questions

Frequently asked questions

How much is ordinary Ohio passenger registration?

The annual passenger registration fee is $36. Deputy Registrar charges, permissive tax, powertrain fees, and selected plate transactions can add to it.

How much is Ohio permissive tax?

It varies by the owner's municipality or township, in $5 annual increments up to $30. Confirm the amount in the BMV taxing district code book.

What extra registration fee does an Ohio EV pay?

The engine uses an additional $200 per year for a battery-electric vehicle, $150 for a plug-in hybrid, and $100 for a conventional hybrid.

Can I register an Ohio vehicle for more than one year?

Yes. The calculator supports one- through five-year terms; annual items multiply by the term and the Deputy Registrar fee uses the matching schedule.

Is the $10 charge for every new Ohio plate?

No. It applies only to the supported replacement-plate path when retaining an existing distinctive number/letter combination. Ordinary first standard plates do not automatically incur it.

What does an eligible Ohio plate transfer cost?

The $9 transfer includes the deputy registrar fee. This path assumes a current same-class registration with no extra tax or fuel-fee difference. It does not include a renewal, expired registration, or powertrain-change adjustment.
