Ohio title transfer costs and what this estimate covers

An Ohio title transfer fee estimate depends on where the title application is processed. The current project mapping uses an $18 title amount in most counties and $23 in Columbiana, Crawford, Franklin, Lake, and Noble counties. Ohio's law authorizes the $5 county addition; choose the title-office county, which is not necessarily the purchaser's residence county.

The calculator supports ordinary dealer and private-party transactions. When selected, it can add the relevant vehicle tax and a registration/plate transaction. Title and registration are separate: title records ownership, while registration authorizes use on public roads. A qualifying title application filed more than 30 days after assignment may add the $5 late fee. The engine adds no separate lien notation fee when a lien is shown with the title.

Engine example: ordinary private-party title transfer

A $15,000 ordinary private-party vehicle, Franklin purchaser district at 8.00%, Franklin title office, no late filing, lien noted with title, and registration not selected:

Private-party Ohio tax at 8.00%
$1,200.00
Franklin County title amount
$23.00
Late fee
$0.00
Separate lien notation charge
$0.00
Estimated title-transfer total
$1,223.00

Registration is off in this example. Turning it on adds the selected registration and plate path; it does not turn the $18/$23 title amount into a registration fee.

Keep these Ohio cases separate

  • Select the processing title-office county for the $18/$23 mapping; use the purchaser's taxing district separately for tax.
  • Do not add a second lien notation fee when the lien is included with the title application.
  • Gifts/family transfers, salvage or rebuilt cases, out-of-state tax credits, and other special transactions are not estimated by this ordinary-purchase path.

For registration details, use the Ohio registration fee calculator. For a full tax-and-fee subtotal, use Ohio TTL; the Ohio registration guide explains the annual and powertrain additions.

Ohio title questions

Frequently asked questions

How much is an Ohio vehicle title fee?

The project mapping uses $18 in most Ohio counties and $23 in the five counties with the authorized additional $5 county amount.

Does Ohio title cost depend on where I live?

The $18/$23 mapping in this tool follows the county title office processing the application. Sales tax separately follows the purchaser's taxing district.

Is there a late fee for an Ohio title transfer?

The calculator adds $5 when the application is more than 30 days after assignment, according to the selected late-title input.

Does adding a lien create another Ohio title fee?

No separate lien notation fee is added by this engine when the lien is noted with the title.

Can I include registration with a title transfer?

Yes, when applicable, select the registration option. Registration charges are separate from the title amount and use their own term, permissive-tax, powertrain, and plate inputs.

Does this calculator cover gifts or salvage vehicles?

No. Gift/family transfers, salvage, out-of-state tax credits, and other special cases are marked unsupported rather than guessed.
